Barkhor Street
It is a circular street at center of Old Lhasa, as well as the oldest and traditional street. Tibetan culture, economy, religion and arts concentrates here, and you can get full taste of Tibet. Barkhor Street like a narrow belt encircles the famous Jokhang Monastery in Lhasa, 600 meters long.
In every morning, the incense burners, over one meter high, are lit on the square in front of the Jokhang Monastery. The blue smoke drifts up towards heaven like plumes, enveloping the gilded roof of the monastery in mist. Then devout Buddhists file into the monastery one by one with holding a butter lamp. In the monastery, there are many statues of Buddha, with a lamp in front of each. The Buddhists prostrate themselves before the statues, and pour the butter into the lamps. So the lamps are alight all year round. Outside the monastery, many Buddhists (most are women) prostrate themselves before the front gate of the monastery. And other devout Buddhists walk clockwise around Barkhor Street, holding a prayer wheel in one hand and counting their prayer beads with the other. With each forward step, they chant the holy Buddhist mantra, praying for the blessing and enlightenment of all sentient beings.
