Jokhang Temple
The Jokhang Temple, located in the center of old Lhasa, is one of Tibet's holiest shrines, originally built in 647 A.D., housing a sacred image of the Buddha, which the king's Nepalese wife brought with her as a dowry. In the 17 century, the temple was reconstructed during the reign of the Fifth Dalai Lama.
The Jokhang Temple is a four-storey timber complex with a golden top. It features architectural styles of the Tang Dynasty, Tibet and Nepal. The precious treasure is the statue of 12-year-old Sakyamuni sitting in the central hall, which has been gilded many times and decorated elaborately with jewels typical of Tibet. It is said that the statue was brought by Princess Wencheng from her home in Changan in 700 A.D.. Also there are other precious antiques, such as a silk portrait of Buddha from the Tang Dynasty and a pearl gown and gold lamp from the Ming Dynasty. The temple is the spiritual center of Tibet and the holiest destination for all Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims.
