Sera Monastery
Sera Monastery

The magnificent Sera Monastery sits at the foot of Tatipu Hill which is located in the northern suburb of Lhasa City. It is honored as one of three famous monasteries in Lhasa (Two others are the Drepung Monastery and the Ganden Monastery). The monastery is built in 1419 and was named Sera which means Wild Rose Garden in the Tibetan language, because the hill behind it was covered with wild roses in bloom. The majestic monastery occupies an area of 114,946 square meters (28 acres). The main buildings include the Coqen Hall, Zhacang (college) and Kamcun (dormitory). The monastery houses many vivid statues such as Maitreya, Bodhisattvas and keeps a lot of fine murals. Also you can find scriptures written in gold powder. Sera Monastery contains three colleges built in 15th and 16th century respectively as well, and it is famous for the "Buddhism Scriptures Debating". These all symbolize the glory of Sera Monastery both in the past and now.
