Baishu Terraces
The Baishui Tableland (or White water Terraces), snugly lies at the foot of Haba Snow Moutains, 101 kilometers southeast of the Shangri-la County. It is an ancient Chinese landform with a history of 200,000 to 300,000 years.
On the top of the terrace is a semicirculau platform pool, and spring water rises from the mountaintop and flows downward with calcium carbonate diposited in the streamwater have accumulated wherever the stream flows. Over many year, the natural terraces look as though they are made of white marble - as if a silver waterfall tumbles through the green mountains.Today, the Baishui Tableland 140 meters (about 459 feet) in length and 160 meters (about 525 feet) in width, covering an area of three square kilometers (about 741 acres).
Baishui Terrace is also the cradle of the Dongba culture of the Naxi Minority Group. Legend says that when the first saint came to the Dongba Religion, he was attracted by the charming scenery, so he decided to missonate here. And the second saint created the Dongba pictograph. Baishui Terrace is the place the Naxi people gather here to celebrate their traditional festival by singing and dancing all day and night on the eighth day of the second lunar month.
