Old Town of Lijiang
The Old Town of Lijiang is a attractive and famous town of Lijiang Autonomous County of Naxi Ethnic Minority in Yunan Province, situate on the plateau at a elevation of 2,600 meters. The old town has a history of over 800 years, originally built in the late Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty. It once a prosperous trade center among Yunnan, hinterland and Tibet.
Covering an area of tree point eight square kilometers, the old town is embraced by the tree-covered Lion Mountain in the west, Elephant and Golden Row Mountain in the north, vast fertile fields in the southeast and crystal clear water running through, the old town resembles a big jade ink slab, hence it was given the alias the Town of Big Ink Slab.
The architecture blends the elite of the architecture traits of Han, Bai, and Tibet forming a unique Naxi style. Water plays an important role in the old town and enhances the charm and beauty of the town. Black Dragon Pool (Heilongtan) is the main water source of the town and subdivides many streams reaching every family and every street. So the town is dotted with many trees and almost 350 varied bridges.
In 1997, the Old Town of Lijiang was added in the list of the World's Relics by the World Cultural Heritage Commission of the UNESCO.
