Three Gorges Dam
The idea of building a dam across the Yangtze river to control flooding and to and to harness it for hydropower has been the dream of several generations of Chinese.
The Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydropower station and dam in the world with 607 feet in height and 9,957 feet in length. The project was designed in 1993, and estimated to be finish in 2009.
The Three Gorges Dam can generate about 84 billion kilowatt-hours annually and is seen as an important future source of energy for China's growing electrical consumption. It is also expected to tame the Yangzi River. With a flood reservoir which accommodates about 22.15 billion cubic meters, even in dire flood situations, the dam can automatically control the flow within an acceptable rang of safety. And the dam can improve the shipping condition of Chongqing.

Combined, these highlight the beauty of science and culture while showing the value of the Three Gorges Dam Project in China's water Conservancy effort.
